Equestrian statue of Joan of Arc - Place Jeanne d'Arc, Chinon, France.

In 1429, during The Hundred Years War (1337-1453), an 18 year old peasant girl entered Chinon and persuaded the French Dauphin (uncrowned king) Charles VII to let her lead a force against the occupying English. Thus, Joan of Arc with a small army, stormed and freed the besieged city of Orleans. She was betrayed two years later and burnt at the stake in Rouen. This large equestrian statue, by the artist Jules Roulleau (1855-1895), was given to Chinon in August 1893.
