In the oUest example the feathers of the upper parts are rufous with grey centres, rerj- faintly mottled or dotted Avith back and with mere indications of white shaft-stripes ; the top of the head reddisli brown; quills brown, washed and mottled with pale rufous on the outer web; sides of head, chin, throat, and rest ot underparts dull rufous, most of the feathers with pale buff at the extrcnuty of the shaft, those of the sides and flanks with traces of dark bars; tail brown, indistinctly mottled with bufi; In a somavluit less mature bird the pale shaft-stripes on the upper parts are much more distinct; and the feathers of the lower breast, belly, sides, and flanks are distinctly barred with black. lota length r4 inches, wing 3-0-3-8, tail 1-5-1-7, tarsus 0-95. Adult female Jhftevs from the male in having the whole of the upper parts blotched and marked with black, while the shait-stripes are much wider and more distinct; the chin and throat are whitish buff, and the rest of the underparts are washed with pale rufous and much more strongly barred with black.
