[346] THE THREATENED FORT Fort Pickens, guard-ing the entrance toPensacola Bay, was a perilousposition more gallant-ly held than was FortPickens by LieutenantA. J. Slemmer and Mslittle garrison fromJanuary to May, large force of Con-federates were con-stantly menacing thefort. Slemmer discov-ered a plot to betraythe fort into the handsof a thousand of them. on the night of Aprilnth. Attempts toseize the fort by Con-federates gathered inforce for the piuposewere held off only bythe timely arrival ofgunl)oats with reen-forcements from theNorth. All the effortsto take Fort Pickensfailed and it remainedm the hands of theFederals throughoutthe war. In the lowerpicture we see one ofthe powerful Confed-erate batteries at Fort]\IcRee, which fired onPickens from acrossthe ciiannel.
