Saint-Simon says thatwhen Le Notre was absent in Italy, Mansart seized the opportunity todesign and carry out the Colonnade in the gardens, an inartisticand meaningless design, but of great cost in execution. The Gardenswere then in the hands of Le Notre. Mansarts action was nothingless than an unscrupulous trespass on another mans province. Whenthe King asked Le Notre what he thought of it, the latter contentedhimself with replying, you have turned a mason into a gardener, andhe has given you a piece of his trade.
