Early Ordnance Survey work. Dedication page of the report by Mudge and Dalby, published in London in 1799, of the trigonometrical surveys of England and Wales carried out from 1784 to 1796. These surveys began under the direction of the Royal Society, and were continued by a government body, the Board of Ordnance, named here. This body was responsible for arming the Royal Navy and British Army (symbols at top). The survey work would eventually lead to the formation of a national mapping agency, the Ordnance Survey. The dedication by the Royal geographer William Faden is addressed to the Master-General of the Ordnance.
