Test Drilling the Seabed at for Aberdeens New Overspill Harbour. SCO 9219

The plan to expand Aberdeen Harbour has been identified as a nationally significant development by the Scottish Government, due to its role in supporting international trade, its links with Orkney and Shetland, and the importance of its contribution to the economy of the North East, and to Scotland as a whole. Aberdeen Harbour’s ‘Directions for Growth’ document, published in December 2012, identified Nigg Bay as its preferred location for such expansion. It is believed a new deep-water facility at this location would provide much needed additional capacity, designed to further support oil and gas and renewable energy investment, freight traffic and transport links to the Northern Isles, and to attract more cruise ships to the region. At present the feasibility study is continuing to gather data, including the information that will be produced from various studies that will be undertaken in the bay over the summer months. These include a topographical study, and environmental impact assessment and a site survey operation (in the form of a Site Survey Vessel), which will be carried out to further analyse the geology of the bay. All of this information will be used to determine whether a robust business case can be established to support this proposed development. Another vital element of the feasibility study is the process of consultation the Board has initiated, regarding the proposed development, with its customers, stakeholders, local communities and local authorities, as well as Scottish Government elected members and officials. The Board have been encouraged by the generally favourable response to their consultation to date, and it is believed that the development would provide significant regeneration opportunities for surrounding communities.
