First COBOL computer programmers, 1960. Exchange of the first COBOL versions of RCA and UNIVAC computer programmes. When COBOL (common business-oriented language) was proposed in 1959, programmers at Remington Rand UNIVAC (Universal Automatic Computer) and at RCA Corporation wrote compilers that translated COBOL commands into machine language. At centre is Charles A. Phillips (1906-1985), the chairman of the CODASYL (Conference on Data Systems Languages) committee and one of the creators of COBOL. At right is US computer scientist Grace Murray Hopper (1906-1992), part of the team that developed the first UNIVAC computer in 1951. She also played a key role in developing the programming language COBOL. This photograph is from the UNIVAC Division of the Sperry Rand Corporation. Photographed in September 1960.
