. A dictionary of the Bible .. . the manner of onetenon inserted into another. But for the wall be-hind there was only one bar that went through allthe boards, into which one of the ends of the bars onboth sides was inserted. So far, therefore, everything seems certain andeasily understood. The Tabernacle was an oblongrectangular structure, 30 cubits long by 10 broad, open at the eastern end, and divided internally intotwo apartments. The Holy of Holies, into whichno one entered—not even the priest, except on veiyextraordinary occasions—w;\s a cube, 10 cubitssquare m plan, and 10 cubits high to the top of thewall. In this was placed the Slercy-seat, sur-mounted by the cherubim, and on it was placedthe Ark, containing the tables of the Law. In frontof these was an outer chamber, called the HolyPlace—20 cubits long by 10 broad, and 10 high, appropriated to the use of the priests. In it wereplaced the golden candlestick on one side, the tableof shew-bread opposite, and between them in thecentre the altar of No. 2. -The Iabemacle, showing one half ground plan aud onehalf as covered by the curtains. The roof of the Tabernacle was formed by 3,or rather 4, sets of curtains, the dimensions of twoof which are given with great minuteness both m theBible and by Josephus. The innermost ( Ex. xxvi. \,&c.), of fine twined linen according to our trans-lation (Josephus calls them wool: epi-jiv. Ant. ,§ 4), were ten in number, each 4 cubits wide and28 cubits long. These were of various colours, andornamented with cherubim of cunning of these were sewn together so as to form laiger TEjVIPLE curtains, each 20 cubits by 28, and these two againwere joined together, when used, by fifty gold bucklesor clasps. Above these were placed curtains of goats hair, each 4 cubits wide by 30 cubits long, but elevenin number; these were also sewn together, six intoone curtain, and five into the other, and, whenused, were likewise joined together by fifty goldbuckles.
