Time-lapse image of a suntrail. Time-lapse exposure showing the path of the sun as it rises from below the horizon and then sets again. The sun does not rise vertically, but at an angle. The observed angle becomes shallower the further an observer is from the Earth's equator. In extreme northern and southern latitudes the sun only rises a short distance above the horizon in winter, as seen here. This image is obtained by repeated exposure of the photographic film (or sensor) over a number of hours.
