Smyly has modified and improved Mr. Holts instrumentby making the central wire (terminated by a small silver button)independent of the rest of the instrument, so that it may alone beintroduced through a stricture of very small calibre, and serveboth as a guide to a No. 1 catheter for the evacuation of theurine in cases of retention, and to the dilator for the rupture of thecontraction.
