Statue of Mr. Arbitrium, Emanuele Giannelli artist, sculpture, Parma, Italy

Mr Arbitrium is a sculpture to be placed on the external facade of a church or an historic building, depicting a male figure pushing or supporting the architecture itself. The sculpture is conceived with all its muscles in tension, intent on supporting or pushing it away the structure in a decisive way: playing on this ambivalence is the intent of the artist's work and in the double meaning of this action lies the concept at the basis of this work. In a historical moment of great changes and increasingly accelerated rhythms like the one we are going through, we are inevitably asked to choose: pushing away the church or the historic building, symbols of institutions, of our history and culture, or instead supporting and defending the church, our millenary history, the symbols of our culture?
