If this is impossible, as may happen in some primiparae, a small allowance may be made for these tissues—say, at themost, centimeter. In measuring a pelvis by this method itmay be necessary to anesthetize the patient ; and this is wellworth while if a decision between some of the more serious ob-stetrical operations is to be based, as it must be, upon an accur-ate estimation of the true Measurement of the Transverse Diameter of the
