Whale or Greenland Fishery, c1721. By Elisha Kirkall (c1682-1742), after Thomas Baston fl(1699-1730). Typically considered as the first stand-alone British whaling print, the imagery is drawn from earlier Dutch examples. The print shows an Arctic scene, in which whalers are in action. A polar bear and walrus can be seen being killed in the foreground.
