I needed to learn respect for authority, because, to be quite frank, before I came [to Parris Island] I didn’t have much respect for my elders. I will never take that for granted again. Its family, it’s like the Marine Corps, the brotherhood is there, and the family is there. I’ve learned that here. If you don’t give respect to people, then they won’t give it back to you. Just like with the drill instructors, they respect you if you respect them. If you scream as loud as you can, if you give them your all, your %110, they will give it back to you. If you don’t give them your all, they won’t put the effort into training you.” Approximately 19,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 12 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
