Llyn Cowlyd reservoir and dam, part of the nearby Dolgarrog Hydro site, Snowdonia, North Wales
Cowlyd reservoir provides water for Dolgarrog's high head scheme turbines, via a 5km pipeline from a catchment area of around 44 square kilometres. The water runs through the diameter pipe and down through an intake grid chamber and onto turbine generators. The turbines are controlled from a computerised panel and the amount of electricity generated is dependant on the amount and flow of water from the river or pipe. A tailrace returns the water after it has passed through the turbine to the main stream. The generation of this clean electricity will help prevent an annual release of many tonnes of the main greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, which is a major contibutor to global warming and climate change.
