The large percentage of non-combustible and the difficulty of pulverizing to a fine-ness that would assure efficient combustion were out-standing obstacles. Studies were made of various meth-ods of screening, jigging and other devices for thereduction of the ash. The method known as Trentprocess, which at that time was being developed at theUnited States Bureau of Mines, makes possible a reduc-tion of the ash to a predetermined amount. The pulverizing of anthracite culm, silt or river coalwas found to be attended with difficulty and considerablymore expense than the cost of pulverizing bituminousor other soft coal. The various attempts to pulverizeanthracite were analyzed and the action on mills ofthe Fuller, Raymond, tube and pebble types was noted,. Boiler Room Before Pulverized Coal BurningEquipment Was Installed with the result that it was found to be commerciallyfeasible on a basis of a mill capacity of one-half thatobtained with bituminous coal and with about doublethe maintenance expense. Experiments were then made to burn pulverizedanthracite in existing installations. A 1,000-ton ship-ment of culm was sent to the Lima Locomotive Worksto make a practical demonstration. This plant wasselected as it had seven boilers in operation on pulver-ized bituminous coal. The only change made in theoperation of the plant was to deliver the anthracite tothe pulverizers in place of bituminous as formerly. Thetest developed no difficulties in burning this fuel, butindicated the desirability of modifications in the designof the installation if the best results were to be obtained. With these preliminary studies completed and thepossibilities of a material saving in power costs assured, the Philadelphia Rapid Tran
