This statue was an offering made by the Egyptian scribe Tchai to Thoth, the god of writing.

This statue is Egyptian in origin and was an offering made by the scribe Tchai (also spelled Zai) to the god of writing, Thoth. As the baboon was sacred to Thoth, the god is represented as one here. The hieroglyphs say that the statue is offered for the soul of Tchai.
