He received the degree of Doctor ofDivinity from Yale in 1869 and from Iowa Collegethe same year. He died in West Newton, Massa-chusetts, May 3, 1888. VAN SCHOONHOVEN, William Haight Vale in Troy, N. Y., 1849; educated at Troy Aca-demy and at Westchester; graduated Yale, 1870;studied law and admitted to New York Bar, 1874; hassince practised law in Troy. WILLIAM HAIGHT VAN SCHOON-HOVEN, Lawyer, was born in Troy, NewYork, August 25, 1849, son of J. Lansing and MaryJane Haight Van Schoonhoven. His ancestorscame from Holland and were among the earliestsettlers of the State of New York. He received his. WM. H. SCHOONHOVEN early education in the Troy xVcademy, and in a pre-paratory school at Westchester, New York. He thenmatriculated at Yale, graduating in 1870 with thedegree of Bachelor of Arts. From 1871 to 1S74 hestudied law in the office of Gale & Alden, at Troy,and was admitted to the Bar of the State of New Yorkin the latter year. Since that time he has been en-gaged in the active practice of his profession, themanagement of several estates, and in the bankingbusiness, in Troy. Mr. Van Schoonhoven is Presi-dent of the Central National Bank, a Director, andmember of the executive Committee, of the Samari-tan Hospital; Trustee of the Second Street Pres-byterian Church, and a member of the Board ofManagers of the Troy Club. He is a Republican inpolitics, but has never held or sought public office.
