Badbea was a village populated by the cleared of Langwell, Ousdale and Berridale in the 18th and 19th Centuries after they were evicted from their homes to make way for vast sheep farms in the latter days of the Highland Clearnaces. This must have been a hard place to find yourself removed too, perched high up on the cliff tops a few miles up the coast from Helmsdale. It is no wonder that the village failed with the last resident leaving in 1911. This photograph records some of the abandoned croft houses of that village, today a peaceful place to sit and contemplate.
