Buren R. attended the publicSchools of his neighborhood, but was subsequentlygiven advantages of the schools at Almira, X. he acquired a very thorough knowledge ofthe English branches. His father, who was a me-chanic, advised him at the close of his studies toapprentice himself to learn some trade. He ac-cordingly made such arrangements with S. Avers, ofAlmira, to learn the trade of a watchmaker. In] 855, however, he left this position and joined hisfamily on their removal to the then new State ofIowa. They settled upon a piece of unbroken prai-rie land on what is now Geneseo Township. Tama. County, his father having previously purchasedland from the Government. Here Buren R. laboreddiligently in developing his fathers fields, devoting,however, leisure hours which he was granted, to thestudy of law. Before leaving his Eastern home hehad decided upon that profession and began itsstudy while yet in Almira. He soon secured a po-sition as a book-keeper in a neighboring town, andwith the wages earned there, materially assisted hisfather in the development of their home farm. Inthe meantime he had applied himself diligently tothe study of his books, and so studious had hebeen that in the summer of 1 850, he was enabledto pass a creditable examination and to be admittedto the bar.
