His last days at Naples were spent in effecting such settle-ments as he could with the creditors of his fleet and army, and. 26 DON JOHN OF AUSTRIA. CHAP. II. in providing for the vigorous prosecution of the works whichSerbellone was constructing at Tunis. He directed the Duke ofTerranova to despatch from Sicily four vessels laden with suppliesto the Goletta ; and he ordered Don Juan de Cardona to holdhimself in readiness with fifteen galleys to ply between Sicily andthe African shore during the summer, for the purpose of convey-ing such provisions, materials, and workmen as might be requiredfor the new fortress. The Marquess of Santa Cruz was alsoordered to get the greatest part of his naval force ready for theconveyance of such stores as Cardinal Granvelle might be able tofurnish to the army in Africa.^ Sailing from Naples on the i6th of April, Don John ofAustria the same day cast anchor at Gaeta.
