Chicken mite. Light micrograph of a chicken mite (Demanyssus gallinae). The chicken mite is an ectoparsite with eight legs with claws at the tips for clinging to the host, and setae all over the body. This mite feeds at night on the blood of chickens. They can cause anaemia and transmit diseases, which lowers the egg production. Magnification: x37 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
