Members of the Mountaineers team are Yu Gu, Nick Ohi, Jared Strader, Scott Harper, Kyle Lassak, Nathan Tehrani, Chizhao Yang, Lisa Kogan, Matthew Gramlich, Alex Hypes Jason Gross and Powsiri Klinkhachorn. Also pictured are NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, WPI President Laurie Leshin, Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., Massachusetts State Senator Harriette Chandler, D-Worcester, Mayor Joseph Petty, challenge event manager at WPI Colleen Shaver, and challenge technical advisor at WPI Ken Stafford. The Mountaineers robot successfully collected and returned five samples during its attempt at the level two challenge. During the competition teams were required to demonstrate autonomous robots that can locate and collect samples from a wide and varied terrain, operating without human control. The objective of this NASA-WPI Centennial Challenge is to encourage innovations in autonomous navigation and robotics technologies. Innovations stemming from the challenge may improve NASA's capability to explore a variety of destinations in space, as well as enhance the nation's robotic technology for use in industries and applications on Earth.
