But Texas was in no more danger of beingreconquered by Mexico than Mexico and the other SpanishAmerican republics were of being reconquered by Spain. Shall Texas be annexed? — In 1836 the people of Texasasked to be admitted into the Union as a state. A few yearsearlier every section of the United States had wanted toacquire Texas. Presidents Adams and Jackson had in turntried to purchase it from Mexico. Now the request of Texas. Since the quarrel in Congress over slavery inthe Louisiana Territory and the Missouri Compromise, manynorthern people were unwilling to admit any territory whereslave laborers could work profitably. Others were anxiousto avoid further dispute over the subject. Besides, Presi-dent Van Buren thought that the United States ought notto take territory from a friendly neighbor, for Mexico con-tinued to claim Texas. There the matter rested for severalyears. Mexico, however, made no serious effort to reconquerher lost province. Our Canadian Neighbors secure Self-Govemment. — Thewar of Texas for independence was scarcely over when a strug-gle broke out in Canada. In Lower Canada, or the Provinceof Quebec — the old French colony — a large majority of thepeople were descendants of the original French Canada,
