The drawback to the utility of stenciling, if notentirely removed, may at least be modified by theadoption of the plan shown in the accompany-ing diagrams. Fig. 138 represents a scroll stencil cut in the ordi-nary manner, the pieces A B C D requiring tobe joined by hand after stenciling the pattern. InFig. 139 the same scroll is shown, but with theparts A B C D extended into simple leaf form, thefoliated position of each coming directly in place ofthe tie, and at once obviating the necessity ofre-touching the pattern after transfer to the workin hand, as the design is complete.
