Heberden's nodes on fingers. A 68 year old woman's hand affected by osteoarthritis showing Heberden's nodes, ring- like swelling at the joints. These nodes are formed by a lump of cartilage that covers the upper surface of the joint. Osteoarthritis is a disease of joint cartilage, associated with secondary changes in underlying bone which may be painful and ultimately deform and impair the function of the affected joint. It occurs most commonly in the elderly, it may result from joint overuse, and may be inherited. Treatments include anti-inflammatory drugs or surgery in the most severe cases.
