Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Pigmented false yeast fungus (Rhodotorula glutinis) - yeast budding. Rhodotorula is a genus of unicellular pigmented yeasts, from the division Basidiomycota. It is a common occurring yeast fungus and can be found in water and air samples. It is able to live off of nitrogen compounds from its environment. Rhodotorula glutinis has been known to cause disease in humans, especially in immunosuppressed patients or in catheter patients. Rhodotorula can be treated with amphotericin B and Flucytosine. Rhodotorula can also cause infections in animals as well. Magnification: x1,200 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
