Effigy of Edward Seymour, 1st Earl of Hertford (1539-1621), Salisbury Cathedral, Wiltshire, England
Edward Seymour incurred the wrath of Queen Elizabeth I by his clandestine marriage to Lady Catherine Grey, younger sister of Lady Jane Grey. As a result, and also because she was a possible contender to the throne, Lady Catherine Grey (1540-1568) was incarcerated for the latter years of her short life. She died whilst still in captivity of tuberculosis, and although originally buried in Yoxford church in Suffolk her remains were eventually reunited with those of her second husband at Salisbury Cathedral. Her effigy is placed above Edward's, reflecting her higher status.
