It is with deep regret that we record thedeath of one of the great figures associatedwith the beginnings of the electriclight in this country. On May 27th,Sir Joseph Swan died at his residencein Surrey at the advanced age of name of Swan will always beassociated with the earliest experimentson the electric incandescent lamp, onwhich he was already carrying outresearches in 1860, but which first becameknown to the nation at lar.^e about1880. From that time onwards SirJoseph was responsible for many inven- tions in this field, and up to the verylast he was busily engaged in hisscientific researches. While the invention of the incan-descent lamp is the most famous of hisachievements, Sir Joseph Swan wasalso responsible for advances in manyother directions, such as mining lamps,accumulators, and photography.
