UPHAM, coal and lumber merchant ofChicago, was born at Racine, Wis., Jan. 29, 1861, the son ofCalvin H. and Amanda E. (Gibbs) Upham. He graduatedwith the degree of A. B. from Ripon College in Wisconsinand was employed from 1880 to 1894 with the Upham Manu-facturing Company of Marshfield, Wis., of which his uncle, William , was president. He moved to Chicago in 1894 and entered thelumber business. He is the principal owner of the Upham & Agler LumberCompany, vice-president of the Chicago Midland Railway, president ofthe City Fuel Company, president of the Peabody Coal Company, presi-dent of the Simplex Metal Bound Box Sjmdicate and director of theKnickerbocker Ice Company, of the Calumet Insurance Company, of theWestern Trust and Savings Bank, of the Single Service Corporation of Amer-ica, of the Security Life Insurance Company, and a trustee of Ripon was formerly president and is now a director of the Illinois Manu-facturers Association.
