World wide in its range, this bird is known inboth hemispheres; in America mostly on theeastern coast, though occasional stragglers arefound on the beaches of the Great Lakes. They are very fairbirds for the table and are well esteemed by theshore gunner. Like the greater number of theshore birds they make their summer homes inthe far north and there rear up their their winter travels they go well down thecoast of South America. In their breeding dress the upi3er parts aredusky brown, the feathers with lighter tips andedges; scapulars yellowish on the edges. Eumpdark grey with more or less distinct dusky bar-rings. Upper tail coverts white with wavy barsof dusky. Tail grayish, outer feathers , brownish red, fading on flanks and tailcoverts to gray or white. Line of same reddishhue over each eye. Bill quite stout and ratherlonger than is the rule in this family, duskygreen in color, as are also the feet and legs.
