John Ogilby (1600-1676), Scottish translator and cartographer. Ogilby's early career was as lord deputy and tutor in Ireland for the Earl of Strafford. His translation work started when he learnt Latin at Cambridge following his return to England from Ireland after the Civil War. However, Ogilby is best known for what is considered one of the first British road atlases, published as Britannia Atlas in 1675. This artwork is from one of the books he translated, Johannes Nieuhof's An embassy from the East-India Company (London, 1669).
