The molten iron ispoured into the converter when it is lying on its side, as shown by Fig. 257, theconverter is then placed in a vertical position and the air, compressed to about20 pounds per square inch, is turned on, the pressure of the blast being suf-ficient to prevent the molten metal entering the tuyeres in the bottom of theconverter.
