Relief figure of St. Magnus from Kirkwall Cathedral, Orkney. (20th century). Earl of Orkney from 1106 to 1115, Magnus the Martyr had a reputation for piety and gentleness, which some viewed as cowardice. He was killed by the cook of his cousin and rival Haakon when struck on the head with an axe. Relief held in Tankerness House Museum, Kirkwall.
