Thesecool tones relieve the russet tints of the grotto walls with its climbingplants, and the general harmony is full of distinction. A drawing in redchalk at the Hermitage shows that Rembrandt made careful prepara-tion for this picture. It is marked by the same easy elegance thatdistinguishes the St. Terome drawing, and belongs to about thesame period. Landscape, as we have seen, plays but a secondary part in theworks of Rembrandt so far. The picture in which it has figuredmost prominently hitherto is the Baptism of the Eunuch, where itsfeeblenes
