The opening of the railroad and canalgreatly affected the trade of the city byallowing farmers to ship their producewithout carrying it to New Brunswick,and the completion of the Central Rail-road in 1852 as far as Somerville was agreat blow to the shipping interests of NewBrunswick. It was about that time, however, thatthe establishment of several manufactories,especially in the rubber business, indicatedthat New Brunswick was to become in thefuture a manufacturins; centre.
