Making inquiry as re-gards the coal in use, he was told that it came from the coal fieldsof Western Pennsylvania, and was usually rather smoky. Com-bustion in these furnaces, however, seemed nearly perfect. Rarelywas smoke seen coming from the stacks, except at such times asthe furnace doors were open for stoking. In considering the causeof these facts the writer concluded that a large combustion cham-ber and some distance to travel before the gases could encountertubes to cool them, was accountable, and so reported at the time.
