The proctoscope is introduced through the anus with the obturator (a)in position. As soon as the in-ternal sphincter is passed thisobturator is withdrawn and thebayonet-fitting plug (b), whichcontains either a plain glasswindow or a lens focused to thelength of the instrument to beused, is inserted in the proximalend of the instrument. Thisplug is ground to fit air-tightand thus closes the instrumentperfectly. The plug being in-serted in the tube, a very slightpressure upon the hand-bulbwill cause inflation of the rectalampulla to such an extent thatthe whole rectum can be ob-served and the instrument canbe carried up to the promontoryof the sacrum without comingin contact with the rectal dilatation will show thedirection of the canal leadinginto the sigmoid, and, by a littlecare in manipulating the instru-ment and keepin
