A ceremony of the Marimo Festival in Hokkaido Japan Asia


In October, the Marimo Festival is held in Akan-Koen, primarily on the edge of Lake Akan, where marimo, a kind of spherical moss is dound. The Ainu and the Japanese government have sought to protect the marimo from becoming extinct. The Marimo Festival continues today with traditional Ainu dance to preserve the culture and the nature of the Akan Ainu have traditionally revered marimo as the "spirit" of the lake and the festivities include a ceremony where marimo is returned to the lake.
