That very evening,soon after twilight haddarkened into the trop-ical night, Columbushimself saw a lightglimmering afar off,and at two o clockthe next morning a gun from the Pinta an-nounced that land had been descried. On Friday morning, October 12, 1492, Colum-bus saw before him, at a distance of a mile,a beautiful level island, covered with trees likean orchard and full of people, who were seenrunning out of the woods down to the shore,gazing at the ships in THE DISCOVERY. Soon the boats were manned, armed and madeready. The admiral, clad in scarlet and holdingthe royal standard of Spain, stepped into his ownboat and led the way to the shore, followed bya boat from each of the other vessels, all showinga special banner emblazoned with a green crossand the initials of the Spanish sovereigns. The chronicle of the discovery informs usthat as the voyagers approached the shores ofthe New World they were all charmed withthe purity of the air and the beauty of the soon as Columbus landed he sank upon hisknees and kissed the soil, shedding tears of joy. As the crews of the other boats came onshore, they all knelt beside and behind theadmiral and joined him in a Latin prayer, whichhad been previously composed for the occasion,and which, by order of Ferdinand and Isabella,was adopted as the form of thanksgiving forall future jdiscoverers.
