Scanning electron micrograph of a white blood cell from a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). In most cases the white cells are B lymphocytes, but in a minority of cases they are thought to be T lymphocytes. Surface features of CLL cells are numerous microvilli as seen here. Leukaemia is a malignant disease in which the bone marrow and other blood-forming organs overproduce certain types of white blood cells. These immature and abnormal cells suppress the normal production of white and red cells, thereby increasing the susceptibility to other infections such as anaemia.
