The Victorian, Gothic Revival west front of St Albans Cathedral, Hertfordshire, added in 1879 by Lord Grimthorpe.

In 793 Offa of Mercia founded a Benedictine monastery here in honour of Britain's first Christian martyr, the Roman soldier Alban. The Normans built a new abbey on the site 1077-1093. Dissolved in 1539, the former Benedictine abbey church became a cathedral in 1877, and the present west front was added by Lord Grimthorpe in 1879.
