As a result of this little study the Twenty-third Corps had been relieved from duty on the rightat Turners Ferry, on the Chattahoochee River, and, by a rapidmarch, was sent some twenty miles up the river to Roswell Factory, where a crossing was effected. The Army of the Tennessee followed, and on the 17th all the armies were in motion. General McPhersonon the left, General Schofield in the centre, and General Thomas onthe right. As the right of General Thomass army was but sevenmiles from Atlanta, the movement contemplated a right wheel ofthe enture line, and the left flank would march four or five times asfar and as fast as the pivot command. On the 17th the Third Brigade marched at 3 p. m. and, crossingthe Chattahoochee at Paces Ferry, encamped on Nancys Creek
