Krk Town, Krk island, Croatia: wispy cloud frames the Baroque bell-tower or campanile of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, rising above red roofs on the old town waterfront of this ancient settlement on the southwest coast of Krk island in the northern Adriatic Sea. Krk Town, also known as Krk City, is one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic. It has been continuously inhabited and ruled since ancient times by Illyrians, Romans, Byzantines, the Frankopan or Frangipani dynasty, the Venetian Republic and Austria. Mosaics and remains of Roman buildings, including a Temple of Venus, survive in parts of the old town, as well as medieval fortifications such as the Frankopan Castle Venetian city walls. The cathedral was founded in the 5th century as an early Christian basilica above the remains of Roman baths, although it now has a mainly 11th or 12th century Romanesque appearance. The upper stages of the bell-tower, topped by an onion dome and angel statue, dominate this view of the town from the harbour marina, with cabin cruisers and small powerboats in the foreground.
