. Review of reviews and world's work. e remember what classical prece-dent there is for it, considering how prevalent it waswith the illuminators of the Middle Ages, and how,in illustrating childrens books particularly, the Ger-man illustrators have employed it for centuries. To-day, Ernest Thompson-Seton and his imitators haveused it very effectively in books on natural history, butit is by no means overdone, and when we read on thetitle-page of Owen Wisters Searching for Christmas-land (Harpers) that it is illustrated by no less an au-thority on Western scenery than Frederic Remington, and we open the pages to find a wealth of vignettesprinted in black and yellow, we anticipate an artistictreat indeed. Close scrutiny, however, leads to disap-pointment, for the sketches are slight and extremelyperfunctory, lacking in the convincing local color thatone would expect from Mr. Remington. Owen Wisterstext is far richer in local color, and though his story isnot an absorbing one, it is gracefully told and refresh-ing in GELETT BURGESS Cover design (reduced) of GoopTales. OLD FRIENDS. THE GOLLIWOGG.—THE BROWNIES.—BUSTER BROWN.— THE GOOPS. The gingham dog and the calico cat J Side by sideon the table sat; \\ Twas half-past twelve, and (whatdo you think I) \ Nor one nor Vother had slept a wink!—Fields Poems of Childhood. This season the Golliwogg, with his manikin friends, has made his itinerary in Holland (The Golliwogg inHolland. Pictures by Florence K. Upton, verses byBertha Upton. Longmans, Green), and the pages of hischronicle blossom with red and yellow tulips, and cobalttiles, and emerald-green klompcns. Neither text norverse is potently mirth-provoking, but the authors showtheir wisdom in shifting the scenes of adventure eachyear so that the series does not pall upon us. In the lexicon of childhood, the word Brownie hasbecome a name to be spelled in bold type. For, famousas are The Golliwogg and Foxy Grandpa, theyhave never arrived at the rubber-stamp
