He was widely respected for his strategic vision, which — combined with his focus and drive — laid the foundation for Volk Field Combat Readiness Training Center to provide capabilities as the premier Air National Guard training facility in a rapidly evolving global environment. Maj. Gen. Wilkening was highly respected throughout the entire National Guard community and was often a by-name selection to serve on a wide range of councils and committees.
