The Trinity device, the world's first atom bomb, being raised onto its support tower. The bomb was the culmination of the Manhattan Project to design and build a bomb capable of releasing the energy of the atom. It was detonated at the Alamagordo Test Site in New Mexico USA on 16 July 1945, and had an explosive power equivalent to 21,000 tons of TNT. Like the bomb that destroyed Nagasaki on 9 August 1945, Trinity used plutonium as its fuel. The first bomb used in anger, that dropped on Hiroshima on 6 August 1945, used uranium.
