Aftermath of Englands Cycle Shows, and the Novelties of Merit Seen in Them. London, Dec. 16.—Turning back to the lateshow for novelties, I find the Doolittle brakeone of the most important and deserving. Itwill be generally adopted by the leadingmakers on this side next season, and its mer-its are such as will recommend it to a Fig. 1 shows a rear hub with brake -fittedcomplete. As the brake is made entirely onthe hub and spindle, no alteration is neces-sary in the cycle construction, as a hub r,ofitted fits the rear forks the same as an ordrn-rry hub, providing that the fork lugs have theusual flat face. The brake is also made to at-tach to ordinary hubs exactly as the sprocketwheel does, replacing the sprocket wheel andlocking ring with a driving ring havingraised shoulders whose use is described here-after. Fig. 2 is the fixed disc which screwson the spindle, and is prevented from rotationby the projection on the spindle shown in , which engages the fork slot ; its inner faceis lined with leather or other friction mater-ial. Fig. 3 shows an inner view of the lateraldisc which slides on the hub nave, the latterhaving raised shoulders which engage in theslots in the disc ring, so that it rotates withthe hub, and has a lateral, but no radial, movement thereon.
