Today California Gulch, the scene of a big gold strike in 1859, contains the remains of many of these early mines.
The Mineral Belt Trail is an mile trail that loops around the city of Leadville in the Colorado Rockies. It was opened in July 2000. The trail is hikers, cyclists, blade skaters and other non-motorised transport. In winter it has groomed Nordic ski trails. Six miles of the trail passes through Leadville’s old mining district. All along the route there are points of interest with information panels. Being in the Rockies all of the trail is over 3000 metres in elevation.
