Provenance: "Tallis's Illustrated Atlas and Modern History of the World, Geographical, Political, Commercial and Statistical", edited by R Montgomery Martin Esq., published by John Tallis and Company, London & New York [Tallis's Illustrated Atlas]. Type: Antique engraved map by J Rapkin, published by John Tallis. Original outline hand colour, decorative border, and attractive inset vignette views. The map indicates, in pink, seven routes for "proposed railway and canal communications" connecting the Atlantic/Caribbean & Pacific oceans. Three of the proposed routes pass through Panama; three through Lake Nicaragua, and one through present day Venezuela. The Venezuela route connects the Gulf of Darien to the Pacific mainly using existing rivers. One of the two Panama routes - indicated as a proposed rail route - is close to the existing Panama Canal which was eventually opened in 1914; a second connects Caledonian bay to the Gulf of San Miguel (proposed ship canal), and the third is a proposed road between Bocas del Toro and Bahia de Charco Azul. The proposed Nicaragua routes all use Lake Nicaragua, the Mosquito River & Rio San Juan. A Chinese financed inter-oceanic waterway through Nicaragua was recently proposed utilising much of the same route, although little progress has apparently been made - 165 years after the map was published.
